Did someone say Merry Christmas? Well, it’s that time of the year when we all let our hair down and get to spend time with friends, family, and our significant other. That last one is most important.

Christmas time is a time to create and build new family traditions. You and your better half need to use this time to have fun and enjoy each other’s company. Make as many memories as you possibly can.

But it’s all easier said than done right?

Where do you start and when? How do you decide what to do? Well, ask no more, I’ve got your back.

Let’s talk about some great ideas just for the two of you to do together. It’s your time to bond and strengthen the relationship. Remember that it will require effort and for you to get out of your comfort zone.

The more traditions you try during this Christmas season the more you will realize which ones are your favorite Christmas traditions.

The holiday season is not supposed to be stressful; it’s meant to be a relaxed period. If anything, it should be a time to destress and enjoy life.

Enough with the chit-chat, let’s get to planning and get you and your lover sorted this Festive season with the top Christmas traditions for couples.

Top Christmas Traditions for Couples

1.     December Savings Challenge

Conventionally, Christmas is a time to spend and splurge on food, gifts, and vacations. But you and your partner could start a different tradition: a December savings challenge. This is a great tradition that is very unique and different.

However, it comes with a lot of sacrifices, joy, happiness, and financial peace of mind.

If you choose to save money during December, you will start the next year with your bank account smiling.

Saving is difficult but if you and your partner do it together then it’s easier. You have an accountability partner. Set a goal for the entire month and decide how much you each want to save.

This printable and editable template will help you start this challenge.

2.     Set up a Gratitude jar

You and your loved one have made it to the end of the year, but many didn’t. It may be that life has been tough on you this year and you are not sure whether this is a season to celebrate or not. Yes, life has dealt you a couple of blows but here you are still standing.

Just the mere fact that you are breathing, calls for a gratitude jar.

Set up a gratitude jar where each of you writes down what you are grateful for the whole year. For each day, write something down that you are grateful for and put it in the jar. You will open up this jar on Christmas eve and read everything that’s written on each piece of paper.

This new tradition will help you look back at the whole year and focus on the positive. The gratitude jar is a great way to reflect and appreciate how far you have come.

3.     Lend a helping hand to the needy

During this period while you take time off work and other responsibilities, decide to help others. Schedule to visit a soup kitchen nearby and help cook and serve the needy.

You could also use this time to give away all the clothes and household items you don’t need to a homeless shelter of your choosing. Gather all these together and donate.

It’s only when you decide to focus on others that you will truly enjoy the festive season. You and your partner get to bond over helping others.

This could also be a great time to write down any family gifts you want to buy and plan for them. You can get your Christmas gift planner here:

4.     Christmas Gingerman hunt

This is similar to the Ester egg hunt but it’s on Christmas. You and your partner must both hide Christmas gifts across the house and each of you must try and find them. Leave clues throughout the house or apartment to help each other.

This makes gift-giving a fun process. You don’t have to buy a large expensive gift for your partner, you can buy a few small gifts that will mean a lot to you and your partner

When each partner finds the hidden gifts they cannot open them, but they get to put them under the Christmas tree, and you can both open them up on Christmas day.

This is a great idea to make gift-giving fun and exciting.

After trying this idea once it has since become my favorite tradition and I can confirm that it’s a fun tradition.

Make the clues to the gifts a bit more challenging and the two of you will have the best fun, I promise you.

To make it a bit more fun, add a ginger breadman with each gift (the cookies smell really nice so they will help your partner find the hidden gifts quicker!).

If you are not sure what your partner wants, you can write each other the Dear Santa Letters with your gift list here.

5.     Pajama party

Yep, Christmas is the best time of the year to celebrate. Nothing says celebration like a great party. Put up your Christmas lights and Christmas tree and turn on the Christmas music.

Loosen up and enjoy the party, just the two of you. Even if you both have two left feet, it will not matter because no one is judging.

Most of us enjoy partying at a club but partying indoors with your partner is a great Christmas tradition to try. Partying has always been a fun way to celebrate and bond as a couple that why it is part of the top Christmas traditions for couples.

6.     Couples’ photoshoot.

Whether it’s your first Christmas as a couple or you have been together for years, make it part of your Christmas tradition to put on matching pajamas and get a nice family couples photoshoot. These are pictures of yourselves that you can put on your Christmas cards to family members.

Also, print some out and put them on your tree. You can add them to your calendar for the coming year or any other household items.

Even if it’s not Christmas pajamas, choose a theme and dress up according to the theme. It’s a fun time to bond with your significant other.

7.     Karaoke night every Friday night

Get the disco ball going and start Karaoke night with your partner. Pick any day of the week and dedicate it to singing Christmas carols with your loved one. This is a great and fun tradition. If your partner is not a fan of singing you can make this a tradition only during Christmas night.

Even if the neighbors think someone is dying, just reassure them that everything is fine and that you are just enjoying some great music and learning how to sing.

This tip on the top Christmas traditions for couples is for brave and confident couples who love trying new and exciting things together.

8.     Movie night

Nothing says Christmas time like rewatching your favorite Christmas movies. Yes, those lovely chick flicks definitely get you in the mood for Christmas.

So many new movies come out during the festive season that both of you can watch. Even if both of you don’t like watching Christmas movies you can choose to stay indoors and watch anything that you both like. You could even try the Christmas movie marathon with your favorite actors.

Make some popcorn, and hot chocolate, and snuggle up together and just enjoy each other’s company.

You could even turn on the hallmark channel and have fun.

During this time keep your phone and other gadgets away and focus and enjoy the company of your significant other. Enjoy a good conversation with your partner.

You can even decide to read a book together, as long as the two of you are together and cuddling you are great.

Make every Friday or Wednesday of December movie night. Choose any day that makes sense to both of you.

These are some of the fun Christmas traditions you can try. Dare I say they are the best Christmas traditions or the top Christmas traditions for couples like you and your loved one.

9.     Let’s get decorating

Nothing says Merry Christmas like Christmas decorations. Start a great tradition with your partner to decorate your house for Christmas. Both of you can decide on how you want to decorate the house. Choose the kind of tree you both like and choose any new ornament for the tree together.

Decide how to decorate the living room, the garden, and the front yard. Putting up the Christmas tree helps you get into the holiday spirit. You also get to spend quality time together and get to know your partner better.

Also, use this time to put up the Christmas stockings and put some fun things inside for both of you.

Try to not fight over how to decorate the house but focus on making this your tradition. It is always much fun when both of you are excited.

If you are a married couple with kids, you can involve your young children in the fun of decorating the perfect tree. Decorating is a great Christmas tradition that brings family and couples together.

The fun part of decorating is that you get to choose which special ornament goes on top of the tree. If you cannot agree on what needs to be on top of the tree, you can alternate weekly.

Important to note that both of you have to agree on when the Christmas decorations will be taken down. Both of you will take these decorations down together before the next year comes.

Part of trying the top Christmas traditions for couples is being responsible and working together all the time.

10.  Get creative in the kitchen

Every house smells like Christmas because of the cookies being baked. You can both use this time to try new baking recipes and decorate the cookies. If you are a great baker and extremely creative, you can build a gingerbread house that you can eat on Christmas morning.

Being with your partner in the kitchen is both romantic and fun.

On top of it all, you get to enjoy warm cookies with hot cocoa.

Remember the theme is fun, fun, fun!

It’s all about having a great time.

Even if you are not a great baker, you make it a tradition to bake your favorite Christmas cookies every Christmas night.

Although it is uncomfortable for you or both of you are not great with baking and cooking give it a try. Feel free to buy some cookies from your favorite bakery in case your baking goes horribly wrong.

As with any cooking and baking preparations, write your grocery list down and your recipe before going shopping together. This will help you spend more time together and not buy unnecessary things.

Here is an editable, printable grocery list and Recipe template. Enjoy.

11.  Magical Mistletoe kiss

You have seen it happen in every Christmas movie but never thought that it could be something you could ever try. Perhaps you think it’s just a thing that is done in movies.

Well, why not add this to your own Christmas traditions as a couple?

Hang mistletoe and every Christmas day share a passionate kiss with your significant other. Mistle toes bring the spirit of Christmas alive and definitely rekindle the love. Nothing says I love you and I am happy to be spending Christmas with you like a kiss under the mistletoe.

It may sound fictitious and naïve, but Christmas is a great time to try all the fun childhood dreams you have always had about Christmas.

12.  Plan a romantic gateway for two.

Most people do not travel much to holiday destinations over Christmas, they prefer being at home. You and your partner can choose to plan a nice holiday vacation for two.

Because everyone will be at home, it is a great opportunity to find good deals. You could also earn extra bonus points from the traveling rewards program for going on vacation during the festive season.

Don’t let the cold weather stop you from having a lot of fun.

The key to all these top Christmas traditions for couples is planning. We know it’s a lot of work so why not get a To-Do list to help you plan everything.
